As a wedding planner, I have unknowingly fallen into the beautiful world of styled wedding shoots. I often find myself explaining this part of my job to friends and family. Wedding coordinators have the unique opportunity to plan both real and “fake” weddings. So you may be thinking, “What? You plan fake weddings”. Well, yes, yes I do.
What is a styled shoot?
A styled wedding shoot (or “styled shoot” as we call them in the biz) is essentially a beautiful fake wedding. The perfect pictures you see in bridal magazines and wedding blogs, are probably from a styled shoot. To create a styled shoot, wedding vendors (florists, bakers, coordinators, photographers, etc) collaborate to dream up a beautiful weddings. Vendors create these imitation wedding shoots for 3 main reasons:
1.) to provide inspiration to couples
2.) to be featured in a wedding magazine or blog
Styled shoots are what fill Pinterests’ boards and leave brides dreaming of the “perfect” wedding.
Since beginning Stressless Weddings in January, I have participated in three styled shoots. We’ve been published twice and will be published again next month, so I think that is super exciting! Today I want to write specifically about the Honey Creek Farms styled shoot. Here’s a brief explanation of how this particular styled shoot came to be.
After I began my business, I was introduced to Polly, the owner of Honey Creek Farms in Dandridge, TN. She is a wonderful southern belle who welcomes strangers into her home like they are family. I immediately fell in love with Polly. Polly also introduced me to her friend and current coordinator at the barn, Morgan. Morgan is a busy new mom who has a great eye for design and a budding event studio in Knoxville, Z Studio Events. As we sat and talked about how I would partner with Honey Creek Farms, we also dreamed of ways to let people know about this gorgeous venue tucked away in the hills of East Tennessee. I was so excited to brainstorm with these two women. We then discussed hosting a styled shoot at the farm and Morgan took it from there. She dreamed up the styling and ideas and we collaborated on the best ways to feature the prettiest spots at the farm. We talked back and forth about vendors and told of our connections. She introduced me to several vendors from Knoxville and I brought up one of my vendor friends from Atlanta. I absolutely loved collaborating on the shoot, meeting other vendors, and seeing the final product come together.
As a wedding planner, the day of a styled shoot, you typically tell all vendors when to arrive and provide a timeline for the day (much like I do on wedding day). We are busy arriving first and leaving last. Making sure all tables, chairs are set up (thankfully Polly and Jay did this at the farm, because they are awesome). And then Morgan and I decorated each spot that would be photographed. On a styled shoot, typically everyone chips in. So my friend Lanta, from Letters by Lanta, also helped us style place settings and when she wasn’t busy writing signs and making place cards and menus. Be sure to check out all the beautiful calligraphy in this shoot!
Just like any work day, a styled shoot is an absolutely exhausting process, but so worth it. I was so excited that we had the talented Amanda May Photos there to capture all the country glam magic. I loved working with Southern Sirens and our beautiful model, Karlie Crawford. The floral arrangements by Melissa Timms were stunning and rentals for the tables completed the look. Also, you can’t have a styled shoot without a clothes for the couple. The two bridal gowns and tux were so elegant and made this “Country Glam” Styled Wedding Shoot a smashing success.
Now that I’ve explained some of the behind the scenes work that goes into a shoot like this, please go check out the stunning pictures. We are featured on two different publications, Borrowed & Blue AND on The Daily Wedding.
